Houndstooth is the new Nova check: You needs a new scarf.

Houndstooth Scarf by Commonwealth Proper

Houndstooth Scarf by Commonwealth Proper

This winter has been absolutely bizarre. At least in New York. It was warm yesterday, it’s cold today. Hell, tomorrow could be tropical. Whatever the case may be, we have to at least pretend like it’s winter and dress the part.

I’ve had it up to here with Nova check. I mean, take a stroll in Murray Hill and you’ll see that it’s basically Nova check central; every single girl is wearing Burberry.

But never fear, the next thing thing is here: houndstooth is what you want to be wearing. It’s everywhere. Even on Lululemon pants. All the cool kids have it.

Check out the 100% cashmere scarf by Commonwealth Proper. It’s hand cut and sewn in Philly and it makes a great addition to your collection of scarves.

Stay warm, Tanto, even though it’s basically summertime out.

Hunting Jacket: Warriors, come out to playyyyyy.

Levi's Hunting Coat in Kangaroo

Levi's Hunting Coat in Kangaroo

Another gem from Levi’s Vintage line. A jacket that was worn in the 1870’s, this jacket might well have been featured in There Will Be Blood. Hopefully you’re not as bizarre as Daniel Day Louis’ character.

9 pockets. Leather. Cotton. Rivets. Badass.

Would look great with a chambray shirt (and I know where you can find one of those).

And fingerless gloves. And a hunting rifle.

Serious Shoes: Alden Calfskin Monkstraps.

Alden 1576 Calfskin Monk Strap Oxford Burnished Tan

Alden 1576 Calfskin Monk Strap Oxford Burnished Tan

At the risk of sounding like an echo chamber, monkstrap dress shoes are yet another must have in a man’s wardrobe. I wear these double monkstrap Bruno Magli on a regular basis, but were I in the market for another pair of monks – and I may be soon – I would most definitely consider these.

Alden makes these single monks in the USA of a burnished calfskin which looks fantastic out of the box, but will look even better over time. Polish those tips extra well for some added character.

Jean Jacket: Because every man’s man needs one.

A fancy name: Levi's Triple Pleated Blouse in Majestic Wash

A fancy name: Levi's Triple Pleated Blouse in Majestic Wash

Well, whadd’ya know? Levi’s keeps an archive of their clothes. The earliest such piece is a jacket from the 1800’s. And that served as the basis for the jacket we’re discussing today (with a decided fancy girly name).

Made in the USA from selvedge denim, the jacket is produced and distressed to closely resemble the original jacket still owned by Levi’s today. It’s made in limited quantity, so beware price tag: it’s high. Very high.

Don’t like the stressed version? Here it is undistressed.

That said, the jean jacket – preferably distressed – is a wardrobe essential. If you haven’t stolen Dad’s yet, consider buying one of these or visiting your local thrift shop.

Wardrobe Staple: Gray is the new Black.

The Protege Jean - Platoon by AG Jeans

The Protege Jean - Platoon by AG Jeans

The title gave it away. Gray is the new black. It’s more subtle than black, yet just as versatile. One of my favorite combinations  lately has been – like the featured photo – a gray jean with a great pair of burnished brown oxfords.

Now, don’t make the standard dude mistake. Gray jeans are great when they fit properly. Hell, most jeans are great when they fit properly. So don’t go Coogi on us – buy something that’s sized properly.

Enter the Protege Jean – Platoon by AG Jeans. A modern, straight leg cut, these jeans will significantly update your wardrobe.

It’s a shitty, rainy day in New York City. Go treat yourself to something nice (that conveniently matches the weather).

Rope+Reclaimed Leather Collar by Found My Animal

It is my firm belief that dogs and their owners look alike 95% of the time. Thus, what does it say about you if your doppelganger – SAT word of the day – isn’t well styled?

Well, probably nothing.

But that doesn’t mean your dog can’t look as good as you do!

Found My Animal has a nice selection of dog leashes, collars, harnesses and various odds and ends. Each item has some serious style.

If you’re interested in American made dog accessories, you’ve come to the right spot.

Tanner Coasters: Protect that table.

Leather Coasters from Tanner Goods.

Leather Coasters from Tanner Goods.

I enjoy a cold beer as much as the next man, but it drives me up the wall when my friends turn those beers into ringlet water stains on my wooden furniture.

Short of taking my aggression out on them with the assorted boots we’ve featured, I had some glass made to cover the countertop.

But that’s not cool in comparison to leather coasters. LEATHER COASTERS! Does anyone you know have them? No.

To summarize:

  1. They’re leather.
  2. They have an embossed hammer on them.
  3. They’ll protect your shit.

Drink your beer in peace, friends.
